Short, but quite meaningful

I knew from the get go that this story was gonna hurt, but I didn't expect it to hurt this much.

When I first learned of Yuu's crime, I thought "He deserves that death sentence." I didn't care if he's sorry or that he has a tragic backstory. A mother and a fucking child lost their lives because of him, and no amount of tears and "I'm sorry"s could bring them back. I refused to feel sorry for this man.

But what the author did was force me to look deeper, past the crime and the walls. And then this story hit me with this quote:

"Is a rope around the neck and a drop from the gallows... all that we can do for a guy who lived his life without ever smiling? Doesn't that seem sad?"

I kept thinking of it even after I'd finished the story. True, Yuu was a criminal no matter what. And most killers in real life are nowhere near as remorseful and kind as he was.

However, out of the roughly 26.000 people out there on death rows around the world, how many were wrongfully convicted? And how many have faced similar (if not worse) situations as Yuu?

I won't go into much detail about the meaning and the messages the author was trying to convey in this story, seeing as lots of people here have done it.

All I can say is that it's good enough to make me shed a few tears.

Loved it.
The art is gorgeous, made just for the story.
The story really touches you, and teaches you as well.

I think this is great. It's getting a lot of mixed reviews, but honestly, it's short enough that you may as well give it the benefit of the doubt and go for it before deciding yourself. Oh but it doesn't really match the seinen tag though, josei would make more sense, so don't go in expecting that because you may be disappointed.

I really like the art and the story was very interesting. I wasn't a huge fan of how the characters were initially portrayed, especially that aunt, but I really liked the MCs by the end. I was also really touched by the last scenes. It's worth a read.

It is a story about forgiveness, pain, and longing. I am sobbing. What touched me? I think it was hearing the girl's past that got to me first. It was the rekindling of hope and the inevitability of despair that was so heartwrenching. Does anyone have the right to take away another's life? Even the life of one who has caused great pain? The emptiness of ideological justice and the hypocritical ways we attempt to see such justice served?

I deeply empathize with all who yearn for life, be it a suppressed, fearful whisper or a passionate craze. So seeing hope birthed to two characters marooned in the depths of their personal tragic labyrinths had me completely invested. Like Romeo and Juliet's ominous foreshadowing, I knew from the beginning this was not going to end blissfully.

And it didn't. I cried a shit ton.

I was seriously crying for 30 straight minutes when I finished this manga.
I can't emphasize how touching and heartbreaking this story was. This truly deserves to be acknowledged by everyone.
Before this manga, I would have not given it a second thought about the death penalty, and the prisoners that are killed for their crimes, but after reading this, I began to realize that everyone, not just normal citizens, but also criminals, murderers, and thieves were humans as well.
I can already tell, this is one of the few manga that I will never, ever forget.
In other words, this manga was short, sweet, and tragically beautiful.
(sorry this review sounds like a weird philosophical book)
But I am still bawling my eyeballs out

Even after reading it the third time, it still made me shed a lot of tears. Something that's rare for me. One piece is another good manga that has those touchy feely moments that also made me cry. The ending is superb, it brought closure which is rare for a lot of the manga I have read in the past. It gives you that satisfied feeling when you finish a good meal. Happy and satisfied. I did wish it was just a little bit longer with a lot more back story.

It's about how we all have our own issues, but the point is to not let the past dictate your future.

An excellently paced read which evokes much thought into the human condition. Here we have characters that have suffered greatly in the circumstances that surround them. When neither thought there was hope for redemption, they learn to empathize with eachother, and in the process begin to understand that we all have our pasts, and we all may suffer with our darkest demons, yet we must also learn to overcome these issues that plague us.

These characters learn to connect with eachother, and finally earn their redemption in the face of tragic circumstance.
